Stop letting the neighbor’s dog bother you

So, you have a neighbor who has a dog, and that dog is driving you crazy!

You have spoken to the owner, to no avail. The dog barks incessantly. Although the dog should already know you, every time you walk into the yard, the dog barks. The dog barks during your child’s nap in the summer, when the windows are open. And the dog is loud!

Hopefully, there are a few things you can do to help him relax a bit about it.

First, understand that for a dog, the barking is not loud. It is the natural volume of your voice. They are not YELLING on the patio next to you, they are just chatting, like you would with a friend on the phone. If you understand that the dog is not intentionally making noise to annoy you, you can help.

Next, it helps to understand why a dog barks. Most dogs have a perfectly valid reason why they bark. Are there squirrels in the backyard? Well … SOMEONE has to tell those squirrels to get out of the yard! Is it windy outside? The dog may feel threatened by all the moving leaves. And as for you, well, every time you walk into the courtyard, he tells you to go away, and guess what! You do! The dog wins every time, as you usually go back inside instead of coming to play all afternoon with him.

In all seriousness, there is one thing to be thankful for a noisy dog neighbor. It can help scare off potential thieves. Thieves look for the easiest home to rob, while still attracting attention. If they sneak around at night and a dog is barking loudly, they are more likely to move toward an easier target.
