Spider plant: benefits for the vegetation of your house

The spider plant is one of the most common, and probably the easiest to grow, of all trailing or hanging plants. Spider plants are extraordinary houseplants. They will flourish in almost any condition in your home. While these exceptionally hardy plants will survive in less than perfect conditions, in perfect conditions they are amazing. They are the perfect starter plant for aspiring avid gardeners.

A fully grown plant will form tight rosettes of curved leaves with a large number of dangling seedlings on long stems, up to 4 feet, like a bushy green mane. Although there is a pure green variety, the most familiar variety seen in garden centers is the green and white striped variety. Cultivated spider plants have small white flowers.

Growing Conditions: They do best when grown in containers and hanging baskets, where their buds and small baby spider plants can dangle. They also prefer bright light; however, they will grow in conditions ranging from partial shade to direct sun. Give the plant more water during the summer. Reduce watering during winter. Apply liquid fertilizer weekly during the summer or you can use granules at the beginning of the growing season.

Propagation: They are one of the easiest houseplants to propagate. Make sure the young seedlings have developed roots. You can also divide mature plants during transplant. They do send shoots or stems. Attached to these stems will be small baby plants. Carefully remove these baby spider plants and place the roots in water. After the roots have reached an inch or two, transplant them into a container of rich, well-drained potting soil.

Care and Maintenance: Spider plants are very easy to care for. They prefer rich, well-drained potting soil. Check that the soil drains well, as they do not like wet soil. They will benefit from placing them in a sunny window once or twice a week. Keep them away from the window on cold nights, as they don’t like very cold temperatures. Leaves can turn brown if you overwater or fertilize them. Fix the problem, cut off the brown leaves and your plant will produce new surrogate leaves.
