Let the love of God dominate you

You are familiar with the ancient written law, ‘Love your friend’, and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy’. I am challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Bring out the best in you, not the worst… (Matthew 5:43-44 MSG)

Society tells you to love your friends and hate your enemies. On the contrary, the Lord Jesus is teaching you in the portion of Scripture that you have just read to love both your friends and your enemies.

It is important to note that he was addressing men who had not been born again; people who still thought of their enemies as flesh and blood. Sadly, some Christians still think this way and sometimes pray against their enemies saying, “O Lord! Fight against my enemies, destroy them…”

The true enemy that every Christian has is Satan and not any human person. Therefore, no Christian need care about any human person anywhere (Ephesians 6:12). Beyond this, you also need to be aware of God instead of being aware of the enemy.

You cannot be aware of God until you are aware of God’s love. That is why you always have to take time to meditate on the love of God. Think of his grace and kindness and how he chose you to be his son, despite your imperfections. Always remember that if you were the only one on earth, the Lord Jesus would still have given his life for you. Just as the man in Matthew 13:44 sold all he had to buy a field because of the treasure that was in it, you are the treasure that Jesus saw and willingly gave his life for. When you let the love of God dominate you while you meditate on his Word, you will stop being aware of the enemy.
