Critical thinking: a closer look at the ‘I tell my truth on MyCalvins’ ad

In the latest Calvin Klein ad campaign, so-called celebrities talk about how they tell their truth in their Calvin’s. Several of the people in the video say “I speak my truth in my Calvin.”

Now if someone hadn’t heard of Calvin Klein underwear before, they might feel the need to get their hands on it. Not only could one of your favorite celebrities have been featured in the ad, but this underwear could look extremely powerful.

A special suit

So, in the same way that a superhero will turn into another person when he puts on his special costume; Wearing this underwear will also give you something that you don’t have yet. What could also play a role here is that they could be out of touch with their own inner power.

The way they can change this is by wearing the right underwear. If they feel the need to buy this branded underwear, it does not mean they will be aware of why.

A key piece

Seeing your favorite celebrities will certainly have an effect on this decision, but it is unlikely to be the only thing. Loud music, along with semi-naked bodies, will have helped as well.

These two things will have got their rational brain out of the way, so that the emotional part of them, the part that drives their behavior, can be influenced. After all, the last thing this company wants is for someone to scrutinize what they’re seeing; that could prevent them from buying the underwear.

Already on board

At the same time, someone may already be wearing their Calvin’s when they saw the ad. Seeing these celebrities wearing the same underwear as them could have a positive effect on their mood and their own image.

These people will be idolized by millions and they will appear to have it all, which means they are taking advantage of all of that. Ultimately, their view of themselves will be strengthened after seeing this ad.

The same old story

What Calvin Klein has done with this ad is no different than what other companies have been doing with their ads for decades. These companies realize that the only way they are going to sell their products is if they portray them in the right way, and so they trust the power of the association.

And let’s face it, if the whole ‘I tell my truth’ thing was put aside, what would be left? What would be left are garments made of cotton, nylon and lace, nothing special.

The truth

Wearing these underwear will not allow someone to speak their truth any more than wearing branded sneakers will allow them to run faster. At the same time, you can help them if they think you will.

However, even if this happens, it will simply show that they are giving up their power to something else. As a result of this, you are allowing something “out there” to define whether you feel powerful or not.

A strange scenery

In a way, it is ironic that a designer brand is encouraging people to speak their truth and be real. Brands like these often take advantage of people who don’t know who they are and are out of touch with their own worth.

Often people like this are going to try to buy what they have lost touch with within themselves. Wearing branded items will be a way for them to feel valuable, desirable, lovable, and / or confident, among other things.

The phrase

In order for someone to speak their truth, they will need to have a good connection with their body and feel safe in their body. This is, of course, assuming that this is the kind of truth that is being talked about here.

When someone tells his truth, he is not going to be talking about whether something is objectively true or not; they will be talking about what is true for them. This relates to their needs and feelings, and how they want to live their own life.

The solution

If someone has a good connection to their body and feels secure in it, speaking their truth is unlikely to be a challenge. But if they don’t, this is highly unlikely to change when wearing branded underwear.

If someone does not have a good connection to their body or if they do but do not feel safe there, it probably shows that they are suffering from trauma. Naturally, this trauma will not be solved by buying branded underwear.

Final thoughts

Spending money on things that exist to try to change what is happening on the inside is not going to solve anything. If this money were spent dealing with what’s going on internally, it would allow someone to really change their life.

So if someone can realize that they are experiencing trauma or think they might be, they may need to seek outside support. This is something that can be provided with the help of a therapist or healer.
