Basic exercises

We all have a good base in basic shots and combinations.

Consider adding the following exercises to your basic syllabus.

These can be trained as “standalone” combinations OR work on existing “before” or “after” “Defendu” combinations.

1. DIFFICULT left shunt to chin (mental foramen) DIFFICULT above head right to chin (opposite side)

then: HARD straight up with right knee to fork.

Repeat the punching combo.

Then: Right Leg Side Step (out and to the right 45 degrees)

LEFT knee to fork.

2. HARD from left to chin. HARD right to the solar plexus.

Then the knee breaks as above.

3. HARD left to SOLAR-PLEXUS. HARD up to the chin.

Then the knee breaks as above.

4. HARD left to the solar plexus. HARD right to SOLAR-PLEXUS.

Then the knee breaks as above.

Basically it is a series of exercises to train the TWO most fundamental blows to the head and the body, followed by a knee strike against the nuts, practicing with either of the knees.

Give it a try.

NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT “hurting” your hands! Boys (or girls) “Nancy” are NOT allowed here!

Now try this:

For the sake of the drill, “visualize” an attacker moving with a direct left lead to your box of snot.

What realistic possibilities are there:

1. Side step IN to your LEFT and 45 degrees.

2. Side step DIRECTLY to YOUR left.

3. Side step BACK to LEFT at 45 degrees.

4. STEP directly to the REAR.

Any of these FOUR “in” footwork changes / maneuvers will allow you to avoid / evade straight left and AGAINST from the OPEN or INSIDE line (your right / your left).

EACH of these sidestep / backstep maneuvers HAS advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the environment-obstacles and / or multiple aggressors, etc. EACH ONE can be useful if it is NOT the only possible option. SORT THIS OUT!

Now add the FOUR basic combinations. NOW you have TWENTY-FOUR drills to use and abuse. TWO HARD FISTS: ONE KNEE or KICK to the NUTS and FOUR footwork maneuvers and YOU have enough material to LAST MONTHS or daily training.

AND THIS is only for YOUR LEFT SIDE!

SOOOOOOOOOO … How do we train this and REALLY LEARN from it?

Take on your main hitting tool (Bob, Spar Pro, Heavy bag). VIEW RIGHT LEFT LINE and BODY POSITION of your IMAGINARY attacker. The bag now becomes THAT mugger – Left hand snaking to crush you – LEFT foot forward, BODY rotated 45 degrees.

OKAY? Get it?

NOW practice dodging as above and then IMMEDIATELY strike back. EACH FOOTWORK pattern will allow you (or STRENGTH) to make adjustments to get in close and HIT with POWER, speed, precision and BALANCE. WORK THIS! Your common sense and your BODY WILL TEACH YOU THE BEST WAY to do THIS!

NEXT … Place an OBSTACLE such as a chair at various points to YOUR left or bags to the right. This represents a REAL obstacle OR a SECOND adversary.

NOW, find out which BODY maneuver GETS YOU OUT OF DODGE and still ALLOW a HARD and FAST while GIVING the “second” opponent the MINIMUM chance to attack successfully OR how you would have to move to AVOID a REAL WORLD obstacle.

And this is just the beginning! Imagine how GOOD it will become if you TRAIN EACH OF THE INDIVIDUAL TECHNIQUES this way!

Do a FULL study of a KNEE punch, hand edge, chin-jab, tiger-claw, side kick, groin kick, elbows, punches, and so on! Master each INDIVIDUAL attack that covers ALL OPTIONS, both left and right side, and the LEFT and RIGHT body swap!

THEN start with combinations!

Just think about the SKILL, SPEED, POWER and MASTERY you will acquire with EACH method of attack, and THEN consider how well you will move with your combinations!

This is what we worked on yesterday at Ralph’s.

As I always say … YOU ARE YOUR BEST TEACHER!

Get something REALLY GOOD to HIT. Attach a rope or belt or anything you can TAKE STRONG and PULL with your left hand. Now take your right fist and hit as hard, fast, and forcefully as you can repeatedly. FASTER and HARD. WITH AS INTENSITY OF EMOTION, ANGRY, RAGE, HATE, RAGE, POISON, FEROCITY and KILLING INSTINCT as you can!
