Apple iPhone – Pros and Cons

The launch of Apple’s iPhone has been met with a lot of enthusiasm, but while many people have been charging outright to get their iPhones, there are many people who have been holding back until they find out the true story of this nifty new gadget. Well, this is what you’ve been waiting for: a list of the pros and cons of the iPhone, so you can make up your own mind without paying attention to the hype.

So here’s a semi-complete list of all the things that are right about it and the few things that could be done better. I in no way guarantee that this is a complete list, it’s just a nice selection of “good” and “bad” to give you an idea of what you might be getting into when you get an iPhone.

The good-

  • The iPhone comes in two models: a version with 6GB of storage capacity and another with 8GB. This is good or bad depending on how you look at it. 6-8GB isn’t a small amount of storage space, but I can see how 80GB iPod users might look down on a “measly” 8GB. I’m still going to write this down as a “pro”.
  • The overall design is elegant and beautiful as it is innovative. Almost the entire unit is a large touch screen, very complex and very responsive. Touch sensors on the surface of the screen respond to your touch to press buttons, move sliders, scroll windows, and perform any other action. Since the entire interface is digital, new software updates could make anything possible for the iPhone.
  • The camera feature for the iPhone is just amazing. It puts other camera phones to shame and rivals even some of the digital camera units out there. Image quality is impeccable in good lighting conditions and doesn’t even suffer much when the light dims. It gets a bit blurrier, but it’s still noticeable.
  • The iPhone has a fully functional connection to the Internet through the EDGE service or any Wi-Fi connection. This is not a “watery” Web either, you can access almost anything. There are even sites made exclusively for iPhone that you can’t see on your computer.
  • The interface, mentioned above, has been designed for maximum ease and fluidity… the animations are fluid and interesting, and everything is easily accessible.

The bad-

  • Considering how new the iPhone is, there are still a lot of bugs and software bugs to be resolved. There have been complaints about parts of the screen simply not working, as well as simple system crashes when running too many complex functions.
  • Probably the biggest problem is the price. The unit itself costs $500 or $600 depending on the model, the iPhone is not friendly on your wallet.
  • Phone service is done exclusively through AT&T, which isn’t exactly cheap. I haven’t used them myself so I don’t know how reliable their service is, but it’s common knowledge that leaving some money in your pocket is NOT their top priority.
  • iTunes is another big money guzzler… with audio downloads costing almost a dollar a song, the folks at Apple are happy for your money.
  • Aside from the above, the main limits are that you can only use phone service in the US (it’s the only place the iPhone has been released so far) and that the battery isn’t customer replaceable; You have to send it in for a replacement when it goes out, and I think it’s $80 or something.

So there is a basic idea of the pros and cons of the iPhone. You should now have the basic information you need to choose whether or not to purchase one for yourself.
