What to look for when buying t-shirts

T-shirts are perhaps one of the most popular clothing items for men, women, and children alike. The reason for its popularity could be attributed to its versatility and durability. T-shirts can be worn as underwear or as fashionable outerwear.

Buying t-shirts can be a daunting process as the price and quality of clothing can vary greatly. So what should you look for when shopping for t-shirts? Read on to find out.

Cloth

When shopping for a t-shirt, select one that will hold its shape after being washed. There’s nothing more frustrating than discovering that a t-shirt has gotten shorter or wider after just one wash. The determining factor is the fabric structure. T-shirts with firm, uniform and close-knit fabrics are generally not only durable but can also withstand multiple washings. Close inspection of the knit structure should show small loops that are thick and round, not stretched or stretched into long, skinny shapes.

Fiber content

100% cotton t-shirts are perfect for hot summer days; however, you may want to explore t-shirts made with different blend levels based on your specific needs. While cotton provides absorbency and comfort, the addition of other synthetic materials, such as polyester, can improve durability and decrease shrinkage. The addition of polyester fibers can also add wrinkle resistance to garments and allow them to dry faster than all cotton garments.

shrinkage resistance

If left unfinished, all cotton t-shirts can shrink up to five percent, which is more than a change in size. Whenever possible, try to buy pre-shrunk cotton t-shirts or cotton-poly blend t-shirts to maintain the proper size after washing. When in doubt, read the information provided on the labels for information on the garments’ resistance to shrinkage.

clothing cutting

The fit of a t-shirt depends almost entirely on the cut. When shopping for a t-shirt, make sure it’s cut with the grain and that the vertical loops are at right angles to the bottom edge rather than at an angle. The side seams should be in the correct position instead of crooked forward or backward. A poorly cut shirt will not only look awkward, it will also be uncomfortable.

Some t-shirts are made without side seams as they are cut from circular knit tubes. When purchasing such shirts, you should check for evenness of the “flower” and a straight rather than crooked garment body. The sleeves should also not appear crooked at the armhole and should be of sufficient size.

garment construction

Like the cut of the garment, the seam is equally important. When shopping for T-shirts, make sure the stitches are smooth, even, and not broken. The neckband and sleeve edge seams should be smooth and even and not appear stretched.

neck band

The neckband should be made of a fabric that is firm enough to stretch over your head and then spring back. A firm point rib is often used. A nylon-blend rib provides additional reinforcement.

Style/Decorative Effects

There are countless varieties of t-shirts available to choose from. The color, style, transfers or printed images and embellishments you choose are up to your personal choice. However, your choice of color, necklines, hem length, sleeve length, and cut should all complement your body. Choose t-shirt styles that bring out your best features.
