temperament in the elderly

Is your elderly loved one changing? Has he recently moved a member of his family and he doesn’t seem to be adjusting? Does it seem like the “joy” is gone from your lives? Perhaps his attitude is negative? There may be a lot going on and your patience is really needed for them to be diagnosed or learn to accept their new place in life.

It’s never easy watching people age. Many baby boomers are taking care of their parents in the 21st century. For some, it’s the first time they’ve had to care for an elderly family, but now is the time. This is not something we think about until we are in the position where we need to make decisions for them. Understanding what is happening will help you be patient during the process.

Older people often take medications that can change their mood. Medications can interfere with each other and cause them not to work as expected. When your elderly loved one isn’t getting the benefits of their new medications, it may be time to call the pharmacy or doctor. An alternative medication can often be prescribed.

Depression can appear in times of change. It is not easy to move, no matter how old you are. People often think that moving means their friends won’t visit them, no one can actually come to see them now. It doesn’t really matter, it can create sadness. If after a short time, maybe two weeks, the depression doesn’t go away, you may need to talk to your doctor about it.

Many things can make people stop eating. Medicines or a stroke can change the taste buds. If their favorite foods are no longer appealing, bring them something they haven’t tried before. Maybe a topping on your ice cream or an applesauce that’s more tart. Club soda instead of plain water can taste good and help give them a little extra hydration.

The onset of Alzheimer’s disease can be confusing for older people. They may suspect that things are changing and realize that they cannot make decisions for themselves. It is good to have a geriatric doctor to discuss the problems of your elderly family. Hopefully some of your problems can be lessened.

As difficult as this process is for you, keep in mind that some people never regain their happiness in later years, but hopefully they can enjoy a certain amount of satisfaction.
