The Fiesta de Moriones is a ceremonial festival that takes place every year to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This is one of the most popular events in the Philippine calendar that brings together hundreds of people who follow the teachings of Christ both local and foreign. The festival begins on Holy Monday of each year and ends on Easter Sunday which falls in the month of March according to the Biblical calendar. The island of Marinduque is where the colorful Moriones Festival takes place, bringing life to the entire island and attracting thousands to its splendid shores.

The story of the Roman centurion known by the name of Longinus is recreated during the course of this festival. Legend has it that Longinus was one-eyed and was one of the centurions present at the foot of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Longinus is also said to have inflicted a wound on the body of Jesus with the use of his spear which bled severely. Standing at the foot of the cross, a drop of blood from this wound had fallen on his eye and had miraculously cured his ailment. Longinus is then said to have been converted to believe in the teachings of Christ.
