car stereo repair

Have you ever had trouble getting your car speakers to work? Since I think many of us car owners have experienced this problem, I will provide this description of how to diagnose the silent speakers problem and also give you some tips on how to fix it. Whether you’re familiar with car stereo repair or not, this could help. If not, contact a dealer who can repair your car stereo or search for help online to repair your car stereo. If your stereo speakers don’t work, try

  • checking the speakers to see if they are disconnected
  • checking all the fuses that are related to the auto speakers
  • tightening the butt connectors to the speakers
  • replacing all or some of the butt connectors

If your speakers still don’t work, I recommend you try the non-working auto speakers directly:

  • Disconnect each non-working speaker from the car’s wires and perform the test below, one at a time.
  • Use a 9v battery and connect your wires to each auto speaker to test them for a short while.
    • Does the speaker have movement?
    • Do you hear the sound generally known as a “pop” or hit?

If your answers to the above questions are ‘yes’, your speaker will probably be able to output sound and is likely to work.

  • Also note which way the speaker moves, either in or out of its frame during testing. So you can also determine the polarity of your auto speakers by connecting them to the amplifier at the front.
  • If your speaker cone is sticking out of the basket, the wire going to battery positive is the speaker positive wire. If it goes the other way, the wire hooked to the negative of the battery is positive from your car speaker.

This direct speaker test has two possible results: the speaker can’t output sound or it does. If the former is the case, your speaker is dead and needs to be replaced. If the latter is the case, you should

  • run new speaker cables and rewire
  • perform the ‘popper’ tests to get the correct polarity as described above

Now, if this problem persists, you can at least be sure that the reason is not your speaker. The reason is probably one of the following: Either it is caused by

  • problems in the platform itself or
  • connections from the deck.

In this case, I recommend that you contact a car stereo repair shop or search online for information on how to fix these problems.
