6 Growing Trends in Bahamas Tourism

1. Heritage Tourism: The Bahamas is a place that has always been rich in history and as time goes on you will find that more and more visitors yearn to know more about the places they visit and want to know more. the people and what just makes us Bahamians. Despite the various museums and monuments it is open to the public every day. One of our main challenges that we face is the maintenance of these properties throughout the year and even during the low tourist season. Fortunately, there are several solutions to this problem and one of them is to keep the story alive through people and their various programs like “Persona a Gente”. Through programs like this, visitors now have personal interaction with people who can give them a more accurate understanding of life in the Bahamas and generally add value to Bahamas tourism.

2. Sustainable Tourism: After many years of soliciting and protecting the wildlife and natural resources of the Bahamas, the Bahamas National Trust, along with the Ministry of Tourism and the Harvard School of Design, joined forces to devise a tourism model sustainable development for Exuma Island Land and Marine Park. Some of the oldest fossils can be found on the island, as well as a number of endangered plant and animal species located on the mainland and many in the surrounding Keys. The model is the first of its kind to be adopted in the Bahamas and anywhere in the Caribbean. My hope is that soon there will be more sustainable models like this in the other islands of the Bahamas (which means a plus for Bahamian tourism/ecotourism) and the Caribbean.

3. Adventure tourism: there is always action around you if you are willing to look for it and find it. From power sailing, jet skiing, sport fishing, yachting, off-roading, camping, hiking and even cave diving. There is no shortage of adventure here in the Bahamas and it is becoming increasingly popular with young travelers and adventure enthusiasts.

4. Luxury Tourism: When you think of luxury, it seems like a no-brainer when resorts like Atlantis and One and Only Ocean Club come to mind. But in today’s luxury, I think it’s safe to say that he is 1000% focused on the needs and comforts of our visitors and making sure every need and want is met. And now, for the first time in Bahamian tourism, we have Baha Mar Resort and Albany up and running, showing that there is no shortage of luxury tourism, but much stronger competition than ever. Mainly, all of these resorts will generally offer the same thing. You can rent a vacation home or suite during your stay, you can play golf, and even have your own private butler…the works. But what will be the determining factor, of course, will be the price and the value of the service offered by each property.

5. Culinary Tourism – Of course, whenever one arrives in an exotic country like the Bahamas, one thinks of visiting the best restaurant in the country or within the resort and enjoying a good 5-star meal. But the hottest trend in Bahamas tourism right now for many of our guests and guests from around the world is to fully immerse yourself in a taste of the culture. From taking cooking lessons on the country’s cuisine with “Tru Bahamian Food Tours” or attending a food festival like “Devour the Beach” in Abaco. Where you will find that both events are hosted by the best chefs on the island and give you a wonderful introduction to Bahamian cuisine.

6. Sports Tourism – Since the opening of our new Thomas A Robinson Stadium, the Bahamian government is eager to show it off to the world and has now introduced a new type of niche within Bahamian tourism known as sports tourism. Over the years we have had the privilege of training and sending our best athletes to compete on the world stage, but now thanks to the partnership between the Bahamas and the Chinese government. The Bahamas can now host some of the biggest sporting events in the world, like the IAAF Games that were held here earlier this year. We also had the privilege of hosting the Carifta Games early last year and the football tournament between the reggae boys from Jamaica and the Bahamas. Although we are quite new to this level of tourism, it is another great addition to complement our rich tour package.
