Digital Marketing: Myths of Social Media Marketing

I talk to my clients every day about their need for social media marketing. Not surprisingly, many of them are misinformed about how it works. Below are some of the common myths about social media marketing that are worth considering:

Twitter works only for B2C companies or big brands

This is one of the most common social media marketing myths. Local B2B companies and small businesses generally have the idea that Twitter is only for celebrities and large B2C companies. We can share many success stories to show that Twitter can also drive conversions for B2B companies. But beware, you can’t expect Twitter to work for your business unless you’re actively tweeting, monitoring, and engaging with your followers.

Nobody uses G+ and it’s a waste of time

Google+ is simply not a social network and it is definitely not a waste of time. When someone searches Google, the search results include social recommendations from those +1 clicks from the user’s Gmail contacts. Possessing a strong G+ profile increases your Google search ranking. So don’t hesitate and spend some time creating your G+ circles.

Is it about going viral or else it’s not worth it

Not all news or topics will go viral. Creating excitement is the motto of social media, but this excitement must also reach your target customers and prospects. It won’t make sense if your video goes viral on YouTube and other social networks, but you don’t get quality leads. Conversion is important in any type of marketing. Pointless viral videos or news will not get you sales leads.

You can’t do social media marketing internally

Many marketing consultants make social media and marketing seem like a daunting task. With a proper understanding of your prospects, the target industry, your products/services, the current social trend, and the latest competitive initiatives; you can easily assign your social media activities to your internal resources. No one can promote your products/services better than you. Plus, no one can interact with your prospects and customers better than you. So next time you’re hiring, don’t hesitate to expand your digital marketing team.

You need to be on all social networks to do social media marketing

It is certainly not necessary to create profiles on all available social networks. You should focus only on those that are relevant to your industry and easy to manage. Managing and interacting with your community of fans is more important than creating countless social profiles.
